Mbeya Region police have arrested 871 individuals for a variety of serious crimes, including murder, rape, assault, drug trafficking, and illegal weapon possession, according to Mbeya Regional Police Commander Benjamin Kuzaga. These arrests resulted from intensified police operations and patrols conducted throughout May 2026. While some cases have already concluded with convictions and sentencing, investigations are ongoing for others. Notably, two men were apprehended at the Chimala checkpoint for allegedly transporting cosmetics with prohibited substances and undeclared imported fabric, and another individual was arrested in Kyela for possessing heroin and cannabis, with authorities suspecting his involvement in drug sales. Residents have urged for more robust measures against drug-related offenses impacting the youth.
