Police leadership needs 'ethical reset', Lord Blunkett tells BBC 04.07.2026

Lord Blunkett, the former Labour home secretary, has stated that the police service in England and Wales is "not good enough" and requires an urgent "ethical reset." Speaking to the BBC ahead of a major report co-authored with Lord Herbert for the College of Policing, Blunkett highlighted significant weaknesses in leadership, morale, and organizational culture. The report, scheduled for publication on Monday, calls for a "root and branch modernisation" of recruitment and monitoring to address declining public confidence. Findings indicate that none of the 43 police forces received an "outstanding" leadership grade, with several rated as needing improvement or being inadequate. Furthermore, Blunkett noted that eight former or serving chief constables are currently under disciplinary action or awaiting results, emphasizing the need for a fundamental overhaul to ensure the service can effectively respond to evolving modern threats.
