Police in Nicosia issued a public warning on Thursday regarding phishing emails that impersonate the tax department, following a report from an individual who narrowly avoided falling victim. The person received an email that appeared to be from the tax department, informing them they had been approved for a tax refund and even listing a specific amount. The email contained a link to a fake website designed to look like the official tax department site, urging the recipient to click and provide personal data to complete the process. Recognizing the scam, the individual did not comply and instead alerted the police, prompting an investigation by the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
