Political Prisoners: July 11th Political Prisoner Nilo Abrahante Santiago Released 07.07.2026

Political prisoner Nilo Abrahante Santiago was released on July 4th from the Combinado del Este prison after serving a five-year sentence for the charge of sabotage. Abrahante Santiago, 47, was detained without a warrant during the July 11, 2021 protests in Mayabeque. During his incarceration, he went on a hunger strike in May 2023 to denounce the lack of food and medical attention, which was exacerbated by his health conditions, including epilepsy and skin cancer. The Cuban American National Foundation warned that his release does not guarantee full freedom, as he will face surveillance and exclusion. Organizations such as Prisoners Defenders denounce that the precarious conditions in Cuban prisons affect the health of hundreds of inmates, noting that 449 political prisoners suffer from serious pathologies due to inhumane imprisonment conditions.
