Politiker fordern Entzug der Stimmrechte Ungarns im EU-Rat 02.03.2026

Several European politicians, including FDP's Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann and Greens' Daniel Freund and Anton Hofreiter, are demanding the revocation of Hungary's voting rights in the EU Council. This call stems from Hungary's persistent blockade of crucial EU policies concerning Ukraine, specifically a €90 billion EU loan and new sanctions against Russia, around the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government links its approval to the resumption of Russian oil deliveries via the Druzhba pipeline. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) opposes this measure, advocating for continued discussion with "hard arguments." While Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union allows for such a step, it requires unanimous agreement on a "serious and persistent breach of the rule of law," which is considered improbable given support from countries like Slovakia.
