Canada's government has summoned OpenAI officials to Ottawa following the Tumbler Ridge shooting, where an 18-year-old perpetrator killed eight people, including six students and a teacher. Months before the attack, OpenAI identified suspicious activity on the perpetrator's ChatGPT account in June 2025 but did not inform Canadian police, citing a high threshold for reporting. AI Minister Evan Solomon expressed concern over this decision and seeks an explanation of OpenAI's security protocols, stating that "all options are on the table" regarding potential AI regulation. The perpetrator had previously killed her mother and eleven-year-old stepbrother before taking her own life.
