Pope excommunicates four Lefebvrist bishops and warns the faithful 03.07.2026

In Écône, Switzerland, a schism from the Catholic Church occurred during the consecration of four new Lefebvrist bishops by Bernard Fellay. Pope Leo XIV responded with immediate excommunication for the four consecrated bishops and for Fellay, also warning the faithful who follow the Lefebvrists, who risk excommunication and the invalidation of sacraments. To obtain forgiveness, a letter of repentance is required, in which Vatican II and the vernacular Mass are accepted. Among those present were Mario Borghezio and Lorenzo Gasperini, accompanied by followers of Roberto Vannacci, described as the "Vannaccians" of Italy. Borghezio compared the event to Pontida, while Gasperini saw in Lefebvrist rigidity an opportunity to oppose "political correctness" and "Europe of the Prides."
