Pope Leo challenges Angola's leaders to break 'extractivism' 18.04.2026

Pope Leo XIV arrived in Angola on Saturday, the third stop of his four-nation African tour, urging leaders to reject the "extractivism" that has historically exploited the continent. He emphasized that Angola, despite its rich oil, diamond, gold, and mineral resources, has long suffered from external plunder, a legacy exacerbated by its colonial past and a devastating 27-year civil war ending in 2002. Addressing President João Lourenço and government officials, the US-born pontiff invoked the resilience of the Angolan people, stating they possess "treasures that cannot be bought or stolen" and a joy that persists despite adversity, while also noting that over 30% of the population lives on less than $2.15 a day.
