Pope Leo gets seven-minute standing ovation after warning the world is in ‘profound’ crisis 08.06.2026

Pope Leo addressed Spain's parliament on Monday, declaring the world is in a "profound spiritual and cultural crisis" characterized by violence, polarization, and distrust, exacerbated by escalating global conflicts and a disregard for human rights. He strongly opposed increased European military spending, advocating instead for prioritizing the cessation of wars and support for migrants, particularly in light of renewed hostilities between Israel and Iran. The Pope's address, the first papal speech to Spain's legislature, received a seven-minute standing ovation. He emphasized that weapons cannot build lasting peace and criticized the insufficient aid to migrants as undermining the international order, urging a focus on root causes like war, poverty, and climate change. Leo also voiced concerns about the ethical implications of AI in warfare and deemed rising European military expenditures "troubling."
