Päpste vorschnell heiligsprechen? Kirchenhistoriker ist dagegen 20.02.2026

Augsburg church historian Jörg Ernesti expresses concern over the rapid canonization of popes, viewing it as a problematic form of self-glorification for the church. He argues that the criteria for sainthood, which focus on personal character and virtue, do not adequately address the political actions of a pontiff. Ernesti cites the case of Pope Pius XII, suggesting a beatification would be for personal holiness, not necessarily his political conduct, yet the public might interpret it as an endorsement of his actions, particularly regarding the Holocaust. He contrasts this with Pope John XXIII, whose canonization he sees as a harmonious integration of person, spirituality, and office. Ernesti also notes that the current, thorough process for canonization, established by Benedict XIV, is being disrupted by "pressure groups" and premature calls for sainthood, such as those for Pope John Paul II.
