A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State, where relentless Atlantic Ocean incursions have consumed vast portions of ancestral lands across more than 10 communities, including Awoye, Mese, Odofado, and Gbagira. Vulnerable populations—pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and the elderly—have been forced to take refuge in churches after their homes were engulfed by seawater. Nearly 70 percent of Odofado community has already been lost, while Gbagira and Meseh have virtually disappeared beneath advancing waters, leaving survivors moving between threatened settlements in search of safety.
