Pressure mounts as Absa revamps leadership 04.07.2026

Absa is undergoing a significant leadership revamp as it implements a pan-African strategy, with former interim CIB chief executive Yasmin Masithela opting for early retirement at the end of June, concluding a 15-year tenure. This departure follows that of Punki Modise, head of strategy and sustainability. CEO Kenny Fihla, aiming to increase market share, has appointed new executives, including Zaid Moola to lead CIB, Sitoyo Lopokoiyit as CEO of personal and private banking, and Leonard Barnard as CEO of business banking. Analysts, like Radebe Sipamla from Mergence, have noted historical issues of underperformance and a lack of accountability at Absa, suggesting these changes are necessary to bring fresh perspectives and dismantle a potentially toxic culture. The bank recently revised its 2026 return on equity guidance downwards to around 15%, citing lower-than-expected interest income and margin pressures in African regions.
