PRIME Graduates struggle to secure internships as companies cut costs 07.07.2026

Kenyan university students are facing significant challenges in securing internships due to a widening gap between the growing number of graduates and available corporate positions. Lilian Ngala, HR Director at Diamond Trust Bank, notes that companies facing financial losses often cut internship budgets because they offer no immediate financial return. To remain competitive, students must supplement their degrees with digital skills and soft skills like teamwork. Meanwhile, Professor Francis Mula from the University of Nairobi highlights that most university curricula do not mandate internships, unlike specialized fields like engineering or medicine. While the government funds state-led internship programs, these funds rarely reach the private sector where most opportunities exist. Experts suggest that making internships a mandatory, publicly funded component of all degree programs could better bridge the gap between theoretical academic learning and practical industry requirements.
