Medical insurance claims in Kenya have nearly doubled in the last five years, reaching Sh52.61 billion in the past year, a significant increase from Sh26.69 billion in 2021. This surge is attributed to escalating healthcare costs, with Kenya's medical inflation projected at 13.5 percent for this year, and increased utilization of services, partly due to higher uptake of employer-sponsored schemes and expanded benefits. Consequently, insurers have raised premiums by 81.1 percent from 2021 to Sh93.28 billion last year to maintain profitability amidst shrinking margins. Medical insurance represents 41 percent of the general insurance market, highlighting its importance and vulnerability. Employers are responding by implementing measures such as higher deductibles and co-payments.
