PRIME MPs order audit of State internship scheme 03.06.2026

The National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee has mandated a special audit of Kenya's Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP), which commenced in 2019 to offer practical experience to graduates and enhance their employability. This directive stems from persistent issues including payroll anomalies and delayed stipend payments, despite the programme's expansion and significant government funding. The audit, to be conducted by Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu by December 30, 2026, will scrutinize financial and payroll records since the programme's inception. The committee emphasized that funds allocated to PSIP should solely cover intern stipends, not operational costs, in response to ongoing concerns about administration and financial accountability within this key youth employment initiative.
