PRIME New formula dims hope of June diesel price cuts 02.06.2026

Kenya has revised its fuel pricing formula, meaning consumers will not fully benefit from the recent drop in global fuel costs for the June 15 review of diesel, petrol, and kerosene. Under the new method, imported cargo arriving between May 10 and May 31 will be priced using April's average global prices, and shipments from June 1 to June 9 will use May's average prices. This change prevents consumers from realizing the full extent of the price decrease in refined fuel observed in May. Consequently, the government may need to increase subsidies to fulfill President William Ruto's promise of a Sh10 per litre diesel price cut in the June-July cycle. Global diesel prices fell significantly in May, but the new formula delays the consumer impact. This adjustment aims for greater transparency and consistency in pricing, addressing past instances where pricing shifts disadvantaged consumers.
