PRIME Sh1.2bn Royco dispute tests multinationals’ tax rules 25.06.2026

The High Court has cleared the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to pursue a new appeal against Unilever Kenya in a long-running tax dispute valued at over Sh1.2 billion. The case centers on the taxation of royalty payments made by Unilever Kenya to its foreign parent company for the use of trademarks and recipes, including those for popular products like Royco seasoning. KRA argues that these royalty payments were overpriced and should attract higher customs duties and taxes, while Unilever contends that the payments were arm's length and compliant with tax laws.
