PRIME Taming trade-based money laundering 03.05.2026

Trade-based money laundering (TBML) threatens Kenya's financial integrity as the nation's trade hub status expands, with criminals manipulating invoices, quantities, and pricing to disguise illicit flows. The Financial Reporting Centre (FRC) must strengthen data integration by linking Kenya Revenue Authority customs declarations with banking transactions for real-time anomaly detection using advanced analytics. A coordinated multi-agency approach involving the Central Bank of Kenya, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and customs authorities is critical, focusing on high-risk sectors like precious metals and freight forwarding. Capacity building for small and medium-sized enterprises and adopting technologies such as AI and blockchain can enhance transparency, compliance, and help Kenya exit the money laundering 'grey list', bolstering fiscal stability and international credibility.
