PRIME US lists Kenya among key markets for fake medicines, electronics 05.05.2026

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has officially identified Kenya as a major hub and transit point for the global trade of counterfeit goods. The report highlights that Kenya’s ineffective intellectual property enforcement and porous borders allow illicit products, primarily originating from China and India, to infiltrate local markets and reach international destinations like Nigeria and Russia. This illicit trade includes dangerous pharmaceuticals, electronics, and clothing. Domestic enforcement has faltered, as the Anti-Counterfeit Authority recorded only 95 intellectual property rights in the fiscal year ending June 2025, far below its 300-target goal. These regulatory gaps, exacerbated by the rise of e-commerce and small-parcel courier shipments, threaten legitimate businesses, reduce tax revenues, and fund organized criminal networks globally.
