Prison has UK record for number of working inmates 05.05.2026

HMP Oakwood, a prison near Wolverhampton, has set a UK record with 1,993 of its 2,000 inmates employed in various roles, including an in-house supermarket partnership with Iceland, metalwork, gardening, and window assembling. Director Sean Oliver emphasizes that the scheme provides structure, purpose, and rehabilitation, enhancing inmates' skills and responsibility to improve post-release employment prospects and reduce re-offending. Industries manager John Porter notes that partnerships with external companies, such as Iceland donating freezers, create realistic work environments through initiatives like the Cherry Blossom marketplace, which offers vocational training in stock management, health and safety, and budgeting with a £15 spending limit. Inmates report gaining a sense of purpose and routine, with programs designed to normalize daily life and foster positive engagement for societal reintegration.
