Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that proposed U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods are "not a surprise," as the Trump administration has been planning these measures for months. These new tariffs, amounting to 10 percent or more, are aimed at several major trading partners, including Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom, for allegedly failing to enforce a ban on forced labor imports. Carney emphasized that the tariffs maintain an exception for goods compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA), positioning Canada with the "best trade deal" among U.S. counterparts. He also affirmed Canada's support for the objective behind these tariffs, citing Canada's robust legislative framework against forced labor in supply chains.
