Protestmars tegen woningnood: "In gelul kun je niet wonen" 01.03.2026

On March 1, 2026, a protest march against housing shortages took place in Amsterdam, departing from Dam Square. Demonstrators, participating in a "Wooncrisis City Sightseeing Tour," highlighted issues of vacant properties, high rents, and perceived government inaction. The march passed symbolic locations like the former V&D building on Kalverstraat and Hotel Mokum on Marnixstraat, where speakers addressed the crowd. The protest underscored the stark reality of 22,000 vacant homes in Amsterdam while 11,000 individuals are homeless, echoing the sentiment of former alderman Jan Schaefer's 1978 quote, "In gelul kun je niet wonen." This demonstration, similar to past protests in 2021 and 2023, aimed to elevate housing crisis concerns on the political agenda, particularly ahead of the municipal elections on March 18.
