Province of Zeeland shuts down twenty wind turbines due to fledging white-tailed eagles 07.07.2026

The province of Zeeland has decided to shut down twenty of the thirty-three wind turbines near the Kreekrak locks for three months. This significant decision follows the death of a protected white-tailed eagle after a collision with a turbine in April. Nature organizations urged this measure because two young white-tailed eagles are fledging from the Markiezaatsmeer, which poses a high risk of new collisions. RUD Zeeland warns that young birds often fly clumsily during their search for food. Although many birds die annually due to wind turbines, this remains relatively limited compared to other causes. Bird ecologist Camiel Hecks suggests that camera systems could offer an effective solution by shutting down turbines only when birds approach. The owners of the wind farm have not yet confirmed whether they will implement such detection systems.
