Präsident legt Veto ein Justizreform in Polen vor dem Aus 20.02.2026

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has vetoed a judicial reform bill aimed at restoring the independence of the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS), deeming it "clearly unconstitutional." The legislation, proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's liberal government, sought to reverse changes made by the previous national-conservative PiS administration in 2023, which shifted the election of KRS members from judges to the parliament. This reform had previously caused friction with the EU, with the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights finding judicial independence to be compromised. Nawrocki, aligned with the PiS, argued the bill could be used to remove judges feared by the current government. Tusk's government lacks the necessary 60% parliamentary majority to override the presidential veto, potentially thwarting a key election promise.
