Psychiatrist 'unable to section Nottingham killer' 07.05.2026

A psychiatrist, Dr. Mike Skelton, testified at an inquiry that he decided not to detain Valdo Calocane under the Mental Health Act following an assault on a flatmate in January 2022, despite having previously assessed Calocane as "clearly very psychotic." Calocane, who had a history of paranoid schizophrenia and previous detentions, presented as "polite and calm" during the January 2022 assessment, even though a police warrant was required for the evaluation. Skelton noted that Calocane claimed to be taking his medication, which he later admitted was not entirely true, and that Calocane appeared to "wish to take control" during the assessment. Although Skelton believed Calocane would be better off in hospital, he stated they lacked the legal powers to enforce detention based on the assessment criteria at that moment. Calocane went on to fatally stab three people and attempt to kill three others on 13 June 2023.
