Publishers in UK can opt out of Google AI search results 03.06.2026

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced that online publishers, including news organizations, can now opt out of appearing in Google's AI Overviews search results. This move aims to strengthen publishers' negotiating power with Google for content deals, as many have reported significant traffic drops since the introduction of AI summaries at the top of search pages. Google confirmed it is testing features allowing website owners to exclude their sites from AI search, with initial trials in the UK before a global rollout. Publishers opting out will not receive traffic or impressions from generative AI results, though their ranking in main search results will remain unaffected. The CMA mandates that Google must properly attribute publisher content in AI results with clear links, a "world-first requirement" designed to ensure fair treatment and transparency.
