Push to move more women up the coffee value chain 05.05.2026

During the International Day of Women in Industry held in Nairobi, stakeholders highlighted that women provide up to 70 percent of labor in Kenya’s coffee sector while holding minimal decision-making power. UNIDO Representative Tally Einav emphasized that gender equality is a critical economic strategy, noting that structural barriers like limited land ownership—affecting fewer than 10 percent of women—restrict access to credit. To address these disparities, UNIDO and the FAO are implementing a three-year, Sh161 million project funded by the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund and Sweden. This initiative aims to transition women from labor-intensive farming into profitable value-addition roles, such as coffee-based cosmetics and exports. Experts stressed that deliberate policy reforms and inclusive financing are essential to elevate women into leadership positions.
