Pyrotechnics association says perchlorate fears should be viewed in scientific context after factory blast 04.06.2026

Following a fireworks factory explosion in Malta, the Malta Pyrotechnics Association has addressed public concerns regarding perchlorate, a chemical found in fireworks. The association emphasized that the scientific consensus indicates perchlorate's disruptive effects on thyroid function are primarily linked to prolonged exposure in iodine-deficient populations, a condition they deem unlikely in Malta due to the local diet rich in iodine sources. They further clarified that common causes of hypothyroidism, such as Hashimoto's disease and congenital defects, have incidence rates comparable to other developed nations. The Food Safety and Security Authority is currently investigating the explosion's potential environmental and food safety impacts, though no findings have been released.
