Qalibaf turns funeral diplomacy into a platform for regional engagement 03.07.2026

The funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in Tehran have evolved into a significant diplomatic platform, drawing senior officials and delegations from across Asia and the Middle East. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has been at the forefront of these engagements, holding discussions with representatives from China, Iraq, Belarus, Bangladesh, and Lebanon. Key topics included the implementation of the Iran-US memorandum of understanding, regional security, post-war diplomacy, and strengthening bilateral ties. A central focus was the management of the Strait of Hormuz following a ceasefire agreement, with Iran asserting its sole responsibility alongside Oman and rejecting US involvement. Qalibaf also addressed regional cooperation, advocating for closer strategic coordination with China within multilateral frameworks like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Discussions with Iraq emphasized deep historical ties and welcomed the memorandum of understanding for regional stability and energy export resumption.
