Rahman von der BNP vereidigt Bangladesch hat einen neuen Regierungschef 17.02.2026

Tarique Rahman has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh in the capital, Dhaka, following his national-conservative Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) landslide victory in the past week's parliamentary elections. Rahman, who will lead the government for the next five years, succeeds Sheikh Hasina, whose increasingly authoritarian rule was met with mass protests in August 2024, resulting in an estimated 1,400 deaths. Hasina fled to India and was sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia for human rights violations. Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and ex-President Ziaur Rahman, is the first male leader in 35 years, marking a significant shift after decades of political dominance by Zia and Hasina. The election, involving nearly 128 million eligible voters, was seen as a test for democratic transition in the South Asian nation. The BNP and its allies secured 212 out of 350 parliamentary seats, while an alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami won 77 seats.
