The start of Ramadan in France has been marked by differing dates, with the Grande Mosquée de Paris declaring it began on Wednesday, February 18th, based on lunar observation and astronomical calculations. In contrast, the Conseil français du culte musulman (CFCM) calculated the start for Thursday, February 19th, using a purely scientific method. Given the CFCM's diminished status since 2021, the majority of France's 5 to 6 million Muslims are expected to follow the Grande Mosquée de Paris's timeline. Consequently, the celebration of Aïd-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, is anticipated for Friday, March 19th, rather than March 20th. This year's Ramadan also coincides with the Christian Lenten period.
