Reform council vows to call off climate emergency 03.06.2026

The Reform UK administration at Suffolk County Council plans to reverse the authority's 2019 climate emergency declaration, which aimed for net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Leader Michael Hadwen stated the council inherited expensive environmental schemes and intends to conduct an audit of all environmental projects, discontinuing those that do not demonstrate clear benefits, practical outcomes, or real savings. The council plans to formally revoke the climate emergency declaration at the next full council meeting on July 16. Opposition leader Andrew Stringer of the Green Party criticized the decision, asserting that net zero policies have already saved the council £4 million and that failing to pursue these goals could lead to higher council taxes. Similar actions have been observed in Essex and Norfolk under Reform-led councils.
