Rekordverdächtige Schneemassen in den Alpen: Ganze Dörfer abgeschnitten: „Worst-Case-Szenario“ befürchtet 20.02.2026

Extreme snowfall in the French Alps has created a critical situation, with over 140 avalanches recorded in the past ten days, blocking access to several mountain villages. Bonneval-sur-Arc experienced a record 2.95 meters of snow at over 2700 meters altitude, with snow masses reaching up to ten meters high after a significant avalanche on February 17th. While the road to Bonneval-sur-Arc was reopened on February 19th, two other villages, Villard-Reculas and Rivier d'Allemont, became completely cut off by avalanches on the night of February 19th-20th. Despite impending weather improvements, experts warn of continued high danger, with a "worst-case scenario" feared due to the combination of avalanche risk, good weather, and school holidays. This situation is part of a broader pattern of increased avalanche danger across the Alps.
