Removing 30% of my penis saved my life – this is why I let the surgery be filmed 06.05.2026

Alastair Munro, a 49-year-old construction engineer from Inverness, delayed consulting a doctor for six weeks after noticing a growing lump on his penis, resulting in a diagnosis of penile cancer—a rare condition affecting 80-90 men annually in Scotland and 700 across the UK. Under surgeon CJ Shukla at Edinburgh's Western General Hospital, one of two Scottish specialist centres, Munro underwent a seven-hour operation removing 30% of his penis and lymph nodes, followed by reconstruction with a thigh skin graft and a second surgery; the procedure was filmed for the BBC documentary "Surgeons: At The Edge of Life," airing on BBC Two on Wednesday and BBC Scotland on 11 May, to raise awareness and combat diagnostic delays due to embarrassment. Despite complications like lymphedema and a high recurrence risk, Munro credits the NHS for saving his life and stresses the importance of early detection for symptoms such as lumps or bleeding.
