Report: Bathing Waters "Not So Harmless After All" 03.07.2026

A report published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in mid-June certifies that Europe's bathing waters predominantly have excellent water quality. Nearly 85 percent of the more than 22,000 bathing sites across the 27 EU member states, as well as Albania and Switzerland, reportedly have excellent water quality, with 96 percent meeting EU minimum standards. In Austria, 96.5 percent of the 260 examined bathing waters were rated as "excellent." However, these figures refer only to intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli. These bacteria can cause stomach upsets, diarrhea, and infections.
