Resolution on 1974 Cyprus sexual violence ‘incomprehensible’, German MEP says 07.07.2026

German MEP Irmhild Bossdorf of the Alternative for Germany party has criticized the European Parliament's decision to vote on a report regarding sexual violence against Cypriot women during the 1974 Turkish invasion. Speaking during a plenary session on Tuesday, Bossdorf described the move as "incomprehensible," arguing that the Femm committee is overstepping its authority by attempting to interpret a geopolitical conflict through a gender lens. She noted that while Turkey seeks a two-state solution, the EU favors a confederation model, making a resolution unlikely. Bossdorf argued that issues such as gender-sensitive counseling and the formal recognition of witness testimony are not the pressing concerns for the ongoing tensions between Turkey and Greece. Instead, she urged the Parliament to focus on improving cooperation between these two NATO partners rather than linking historical crimes to EU gender mainstreaming directives.
