Riesen-Lawine verschlingt Tiroler Skihütte – „Richtige Entscheidung, Buchungen zu stornieren“ 23.02.2026

A massive avalanche struck the Franz-Senn-Hütte in Austria's Stubaier Alpen on Saturday, February 21st, at 4:25 PM. The avalanche, approximately 400 meters wide and originating from 500 meters of elevation, descended to about 2000 meters below the hut, which is situated at 2500 meters. While the hut itself, with 140 sleeping places, withstood the impact, its technical systems temporarily failed. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the hut's manager, Thomas Fankhauser, had previously canceled all bookings and sent guests away due to high avalanche risk following heavy snowfall and a significant temperature increase. This proactive measure proved correct, as only the dust from the avalanche reached the building. The incident occurred amidst a period of heightened avalanche danger in Austria, with seven fatalities reported since Friday and AT-Alarm in Tirol and Vorarlberg.
