Riesen-Lawine verschlingt Tiroler Skihütte – „Richtige Entscheidung, Buchungen zu stornieren“ 24.02.2026

A massive avalanche struck the Franz-Senn-Hütte in the Stubaier Alps, Austria, on Saturday afternoon, February 21st, at 4:25 PM. The avalanche, approximately 400 meters wide and originating from 500 meters of elevation, descended to about 2000 meters below the hut, which is situated at 2500 meters. While the hut itself withstood the impact, its technical systems temporarily failed. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the hut's manager, Thomas Fankhauser, had proactively canceled all bookings and sent guests home due to high avalanche risk following significant snowfall and a temperature increase. This decision proved prescient, as the avalanche's dust only reached the hut. The incident occurred amidst a period of heightened avalanche danger in Austria, with seven fatalities reported since Friday and AT-Alarm in Tirol and Vorarlberg.
