Ringgit opens flat against greenback as traders reassess US rate hike prospects 12h ago

On Monday, the Malaysian ringgit opened mostly flat against the US dollar, trading at 4.0695/0780 compared to Friday's close of 4.0690/0735. This stability follows traders reassessing US interest rate hike prospects due to weaker-than-expected US nonfarm payrolls data. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that the Federal Reserve's reluctance to provide forward guidance has contributed to this stability. Investors are now looking toward two critical events scheduled for Thursday, July 9: the release of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes and the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting. While the ringgit remained stable against the greenback, it showed mixed performance against other major and regional currencies, weakening against the euro, British pound, Singapore dollar, Thai baht, Indonesian rupiah, and Philippine peso, while strengthening against the Japanese yen.
