Rise in rice production under President Ruto 07.07.2026

Under President William Ruto's administration, Kenya has experienced a significant surge in local rice production, driven by strategic state interventions in irrigation and infrastructure. Official government data indicates that national rice output rose to 305,000 tonnes last year, marking a substantial 59 per cent increase from the 192,000 tonnes recorded in 2022. A primary driver of this growth is the Mwea rice scheme, which now covers 35,000 irrigated acres and has boosted the economic value of Wang'uru to Sh15 billion. Furthermore, state-backed irrigation initiatives in the Mt Kenya region have already benefited 8,000 smallholder farmers. To sustain this momentum, the government plans to connect 100,000 additional farmers through community networks and is currently constructing 50 priority dams nationwide to ensure reliable water management and long-term food security.
