Tiger attacks on cattle in Munnar's plantation sector have escalated, prompting concern and protests from plantation workers. Over three months, more than 18 cattle were killed, leading the Forest department to set a trap in Pampanmala, Thalayar estate, where a five-year-old male tiger was captured and relocated to Periyar Tiger Reserve on March 21. Despite this, another attack occurred, killing two calves, suggesting the problem persists. Officials suspect the easy availability of livestock, often kept near forest fringes, is drawing tigers away from their natural prey like Indian gaur and deer. Wildlife experts suggest the convenience of domestic animals is a primary draw, and the continued attacks after relocation indicate the wrong tiger may have been captured. The economic impact is significant, with milk production dropping by 1,500 litres daily due to cattle losses. The Forest department plans further studies, including camera traps, to monitor tiger movements and address this unique human-wildlife conflict.
