'River is flowing better than it has for 25 years' 08.09.2026

The River Deben in Suffolk is experiencing its best flow in a quarter-century after a multi-agency restoration project cleared a dried-out channel. The crisis began in April when a weir at Ufford, near Woodbridge, collapsed after tree roots grew into it, causing the structure to "fall to pieces." This sent all the water rushing toward the Hawkeswade/Lower Ufford Bridge, which cracked, and drained the Ufford Hole, a water-filled crater, onto surrounding land. The collapse caused significant habitat damage and a decline in biodiversity, with fish dying and the riverbed becoming barren, according to Trevor Gill from the Lower Deben Riparian Owners Group.
