Rom: Bernini-Elefant am Obelisco della Minerva beschädigt 19.02.2026

The Bernini-designed elephant sculpture, known as "Elefantino," supporting the Obelisk of Minerva in Rome's Piazza della Minerva, has suffered damage with one of its tusks breaking off. This iconic artwork, created by Ercole Ferrata based on Gian Lorenzo Bernini's design and erected in 1667, is a beloved landmark in a city rich with obelisks. This is not the first time the sculpture has been damaged; a similar incident occurred in 2016 at the same location. Authorities have recovered the broken tusk and are reviewing surveillance footage to determine if the damage was a result of vandalism. Italy's Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, has condemned the act as "absurd barbarism."
