Romanian airspace violation 03.06.2026

On the night of May 28-29, 2026, a Russian-made Geran-2 drone violated Romanian airspace and crashed into a residential apartment building in Galați, southeastern Romania. The incident resulted in an explosion, a fire, injuries to two people, and the evacuation of approximately 70 residents. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted this as a serious violation amid escalating Russian attacks near the Ukrainian border. In response, Romania initiated an extraordinary joint meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation and the Permanent Council on June 2, where 43 participating states expressed solidarity with Romania and condemned Russia's actions. This event also prompted an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, initiated by Romania, marking the first time Romania sought such a session due to a direct security threat.
