The pro-European Bolojan government has fallen in Romania 05.05.2026

The Romanian Parliament passed a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on 5 March, with 281 votes in favor, exceeding the required threshold of 233. Bolojan, a member of the National Liberal Party (PNL), had led a coalition government since June 2025, comprising PNL, the Save Romania Union (USR), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), and the Social Democratic Party (PSD). The coalition collapsed after austerity measures introduced by Bolojan in April 2025 prompted PSD to leave and form an alliance with the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR). With next elections not expected before 2028 and early elections unlikely, President Nicusor Dan must now negotiate a new coalition or appoint a technocratic government, while financial markets fear this turmoil could hinder efforts to reduce Romania's budget deficit.
