Rooftop solar cuts household electricity bills by average of 71%: CEEW 04.06.2026

A pan-India survey by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) reveals that 81% of Indian households are motivated to install rooftop solar by the prospect of lower electricity bills. For those who have already adopted the technology, it has resulted in an average monthly bill reduction of 71%. The CEEW report, released on Wednesday coinciding with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's event commemorating two years of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY), highlights an acceleration in residential rooftop solar growth from a 45% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2017-2023 to an 85% CAGR projected for 2024-2026. The survey, based on over 17,000 households across 22 states, also indicates that while awareness of rooftop solar's potential is significant (57%), the primary challenge now lies in converting this awareness into action, encompassing application, financing, and installation processes. Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi noted India's solar growth story is setting global benchmarks, making it the second-largest solar growth market, surpassing the USA.
