4.8m-tall The BFG among puppets in Royal Shakespeare Company’s show in Singapore 08.04.2026

The Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Roald Dahl's "The BFG," featuring a 4.8-meter-tall puppet, will be staged at Singapore's Esplanade Theatre from April 22 to May 9, with 17 performances. This co-production, involving multiple international theatre companies, showcases puppetry designer Toby Olie's most complex creations, including mechanism-heavy puppets that took 14 months to develop. Director Daniel Evans opted for puppetry over stilt performers to capture the giants' agility and explored the relationship between size and power, drawing inspiration from Scandinavian folk art and Asian elephants for the evil giants' design. The adaptation, which premiered in November 2025 in Stratford-upon-Avon, aims to be faithful to Dahl's original work, including its darker elements and invented language, while also incorporating feedback from young audiences.
