Rubio announces new Cuba sanctions 07.05.2026

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions on Thursday targeting Cuba's military-controlled enterprise GAESA, its leader Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera, and the natural resources company MOA Nickel SA. These sanctions, imposed under an executive order aimed at punishing those responsible for repression and threats to U.S. national security, signify the Trump administration's continued push for regime change in Cuba. GAESA controls significant portions of the Cuban economy, including hotels, while MOA Nickel SA is involved in exploiting Cuba's natural resources. The announcement follows increased U.S. Southern Command personnel in Miami in anticipation of potential hostilities with Cuba, with further sanctions and potential military action not ruled out.
