Rudi Völler: DFB-Sportdirektor nennt Debatte über WM-Boykott „sinnlos“ 23.02.2026

DFB Sporting Director Rudi Völler has dismissed the debate surrounding a potential boycott of the upcoming World Cup in the USA as "senseless," arguing it would only harm the athletes involved. Völler, drawing on his past experiences with Olympic boycotts in 1980 and 1984, stated that such actions are unproductive and detrimental. The discussion, initiated by St. Pauli boss Oke Göttlich, was partly fueled by political tensions between the US and European NATO states regarding Greenland and the US immigration authority's actions. Völler emphasized that the national team's focus should be on playing football, not on political distractions, recalling similar controversies during the Qatar World Cup. He also expressed concern over the recent escalation of violence in Mexico, a co-host nation, following the death of drug lord "El Mencho," which has led to significant unrest in Jalisco, a state hosting a World Cup stadium and team camps.
