Rumeen Farhana slams govt over rise in crimes in its first 100 days 08.06.2026

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed announced in parliament that the government has initiated the process to amend the Cyber Security Act, 2026, aiming to combat the proliferation of rumors, misinformation, defamatory content, and AI-generated deceptive media. The proposed revisions will introduce stricter penalties and define these harmful content types more precisely. A key focus of the amendment will be to compel international technology platforms, such as Meta, to remove malicious content within a specified timeframe, addressing concerns over fake IDs, bot networks, online harassment, and smear campaigns. The minister highlighted that while neighboring countries have laws enforcing 24-hour content removal, Bangladesh currently lacks such binding obligations, leading to delays in takedown requests.
